Discovered tucked behind an old bookcase in an estate filled with Eastern European relics, this porcelain folk doll seems to carry more than just tradition in her silken layers. Standing approximately 20” tall, she wears an ornate handmade costume typical of Slavic ceremonial garb — bright floral ribbons, embroidered petticoats, and a towering kokoshnik headdress sparkling with sequins and secrets.

Her glassy eyes, painted with a distant melancholy, follow more than just your movement. According to the estate’s former owner, this doll was never to be moved from her perch in the home’s front window — “to keep the sorrow from coming in.”

The doll’s hands are glazed porcelain, her legs soft cloth, and her outfit entirely intact, though imbued with a faint, aged perfume — the kind that clings to velvet-lined drawers and old letters. Her earrings still glimmer, and her painted red cheeks remain untouched by time… or perhaps preserved by something else entirely.

We have not experienced anything unusual since acquiring her. But we also haven’t let her stay overnight inside the house.
